From analyzing hundreds of tracks across every genre — these 5 problems show up in almost every submission.
I've been analyzing mixes with AI for months. After seeing hundreds of tracks across EDM, hip-hop, rock, metal, pop, ambient, and classical, the same 5 problems show up over and over. Not sometimes. Not occasionally. In almost every single track.
The good news: all 5 are fixable in minutes once you know what to look for. Here they are, ranked by how often they appear.
This is the #1 problem. Almost every mix I analyze has too much energy in the 250–400 Hz range. It sounds like someone threw a blanket over your monitors. Your kick loses punch. Your vocals sound nasal. Your whole mix feels "thick" in a bad way.
Why it happens: Most instruments have fundamental frequencies in this range — bass, guitar, piano, vocals, even snares. When you layer 20+ tracks, they all pile up here.
The fix: Put a bell EQ on your mix bus at 350 Hz, Q of 1.2, and cut 2-3 dB. But check with a spectrum analyzer first — look at a reference track in your genre and see where its 350 Hz region sits. If yours is 4+ dB above that, you've got mud.
The second most common issue. Your mix sounds dull, muffled, dark. You can hear it on phone speakers — everything sounds like it's coming from inside a box.
Why it happens: Low-pass filters on synths, rolled-off highs on cheap microphones, and simply forgetting to add air. Also: listening fatigue makes your ears less sensitive to highs after 30 minutes.
The fix: High shelf starting at 8–10 kHz, +2 dB. If you have individual tracks that need air, use a gentle high shelf on cymbals, vocals, and leads — not the mix bus. The goal is to match the high-end energy of commercial tracks in your genre.
Your mix sounds flat, lifeless, and quiet — even though your meters say it's loud. You've crushed all the transients. The kick doesn't punch. The snare doesn't crack. Everything sounds "squashed."
Why it happens: Bus compression set too aggressively, limiters on individual tracks, or just too many compressors in series. Producers see "make it louder" and reach for another compressor.
The fix: Check your crest factor (the difference between peak and RMS). If it's below 8 dB, you're over-compressing. Remove compressors from your mix bus. Use them on individual tracks instead — lightly. Let the mix breathe.
Your mix sounds like it's coming from a single speaker. Everything is piled in the center. It doesn't fill the room. On headphones, it sounds cramped.
Why it happens: Most producers pan things center by default. Synths, bass, kicks, vocals — all sitting at 0. The stereo field is wasted.
The fix: Use mid/side processing. Boost the side channel above 200 Hz by 10-15%. Pan supporting elements (doubles, harmonies, ambient pads) wide. Keep kick, bass, lead vocal, and snare in the center. Check your stereo width value — for most modern genres, 0.7–0.9 is the sweet spot.
Your mix sounds great in your studio, but when you upload to Spotify, it's too quiet. Or YouTube crushes it. Or Apple Music makes it sound different. You didn't account for platform normalization.
Why it happens: Producers mix to a target that feels good in the room, not to the platform's spec. Spotify normalizes to -14 LUFS. Apple Music to -16 LUFS. YouTube to -14 LUFS. If your mix is at -8 LUFS, Spotify will turn it down, and it'll sound quieter than a mix that was originally at -14.
The fix: Mix to -14 LUFS integrated. Leave 1 dB of true peak headroom (-1 dBTP). Check your loudness before exporting — you can use a free LUFS checker to verify. Don't try to be louder than the platform — it'll just turn you down.
Notice the pattern: 4 of the 5 problems are about balance, not quality. Your mix isn't bad — it's just unbalanced. Too much here, not enough there, too compressed, too narrow. Fixing these 5 things takes a mix from "demo" to "release-ready" faster than any plugin purchase.
