How to Check If Your Mix Is Done — 6 Objective Signs

The hardest part of mixing is knowing when to stop. You've been listening for 3 hours, everything sounds "fine," but you can't tell if it's actually good or if your ears have adapted. Here are 6 objective checks that tell you exactly when your mix is done — no guessing required.

1. LUFS: -16 to -18 Pre-Limiter

✅ Good: -16 to -18 LUFS integrated

Your mix has healthy dynamics. The mastering engineer has room to shape the loudness.

❌ Bad: Above -14 LUFS

Your transients are squashed. Mastering can make it louder but can't put punch back. Pull the whole mix down 4-6 dB.

2. True Peak: Under -1 dBTP

✅ Good: Under -1 dBTP

Safe for all streaming platforms. No inter-sample clipping.

❌ Bad: Above -1 dBTP

Will clip on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Check true peak, not just sample peak.

3. Sub-30 Hz: Nothing

✅ Good: No energy below 30 Hz

Your headroom is available for the frequencies that matter.

❌ Bad: Energy below 30 Hz

Inaudible rumble eating your headroom. High-pass at 28-30 Hz on everything except kick and bass.

4. 200-500 Hz: Controlled

✅ Good: Each element has its own space

The mix sounds clear. Vocals cut through. Bass is defined.

❌ Bad: Buildup in 200-500 Hz

Mud. The #1 note from mastering engineers. Solo each element and cut -2 dB on the less important ones.

5. Mono Compatibility: Nothing Disappears

✅ Good: All elements audible in mono

Your mix will translate on phones, Bluetooth speakers, and club systems.

❌ Bad: Bass or vocals vanish in mono

Phase issues from stereo widening. Fix in the mix — mastering can't solve phase problems.

6. Crest Factor: 8-12 dB

✅ Good: 8-12 dB crest factor

Healthy dynamics. The mix has punch. Transients are intact.

❌ Bad: Under 6 dB

Squashed. No dynamics left for mastering to enhance. The mix will sound flat and fatiguing.
