Mix Bus EQ: The 5 Frequencies That Matter Most
Mix bus EQ is the most powerful and most dangerous tool in your mixing arsenal. Done right, it glues your mix together, adds clarity, and makes everything sound like a record. Done wrong, it ruins weeks of careful track-level EQ work in one move.
The secret is that you don't need a 32-band EQ on your mix bus. You need five moves — five specific frequency adjustments that address the most common mix-wide problems. Master these five, and your mix bus EQ will do more than any plugin purchase ever could.
Before you touch the mix bus: the golden rule
Mix bus EQ is for broad tonal balance, not surgical fixes. If a specific instrument has a problem at 2 kHz, fix it on that instrument's track — not on the mix bus. The mix bus is for issues that affect the entire mix: overall mud, overall harshness, overall brightness. If you find yourself making narrow cuts on the mix bus, you're fixing the wrong thing in the wrong place.
Also: always EQ your mix bus with the mix playing, not on silence. The effect of a 200 Hz cut is different when the bass is playing versus when it's not. Make decisions in context.
Frequency 1: 30–60 Hz — Sub control
The sub region is where rumble, air conditioning noise, and unnecessary low-frequency energy live. Most instruments don't need information below 40 Hz — even bass guitar fundamentals rarely go below 41 Hz (low E). Leaving uncontrolled sub energy in your mix eats headroom, makes your mix sound muddy on big systems, and wastes limiter capacity on frequencies listeners can't hear on most playback systems.
The move: High-pass filter at 20–30 Hz on the mix bus. Use a gentle slope (12 dB/octave). This removes inaudible subsonic garbage without affecting audible bass. If your mix has excessive sub energy (common with 808s and synth bass), you can push the filter to 40 Hz — but listen carefully on good monitors or headphones to make sure you're not removing audible weight.
How to check: Run your mix through the spectral analyzer and look at the 20–40 Hz region. If there's significant energy there and your track has no intentional sub-bass content, you have rumble. Filter it.
Frequency 2: 200–400 Hz — The mud zone
This is the #1 problem we see in mix analysis. The 200–400 Hz range is where bass guitar fundamentals, low-mid guitar frequencies, room modes, and vocal body all pile up. When too much energy accumulates here, your mix sounds "thick" — like someone threw a blanket over your monitors. Kicks lose punch, vocals sound nasal, and the whole mix feels sluggish.
The move: Bell cut at 300–350 Hz, Q of 1.0–1.5, -2 to -3 dB. This is the single most impactful mix bus EQ move. It clears mud without thinning the mix. Don't cut more than -3 dB — if you need more, you have a track-level problem, not a mix bus problem.
How to check: Compare your mix's 300 Hz region to a reference track in your genre using the spectral analyzer. If you're 4+ dB hotter at 300 Hz than the reference, you have mud. A -2 dB cut on the mix bus plus track-level cleanup will fix it.

Frequency 3: 2–5 kHz — The harshness range
The 2–5 kHz range is where human hearing is most sensitive (evolutionarily, this is the frequency range of a baby's cry). It's also where guitars, vocals, snare attacks, and synth leads all compete. Too much energy here and your mix sounds harsh, piercing, and fatiguing — listeners turn it down after 30 seconds without knowing why.
The move: If your mix sounds harsh, a narrow bell cut at 3–4 kHz, Q of 2–3, -1.5 to -2 dB. This is a subtle move — more than -2 dB and your mix starts sounding dull. The goal is to take the edge off, not to remove presence.
Caution: Harshness is often a track-level problem, not a mix bus problem. If one guitar is harsh at 3 kHz, fix that guitar. Don't cut the mix bus and dull everything else. Only cut the mix bus if the harshness is a cumulative effect of multiple instruments stacking up in this range.

Frequency 4: 8–12 kHz — Presence and clarity
The 8–12 kHz range is where clarity lives. Vocals, cymbals, acoustic guitar detail, and mix "air" all sit here. Too little and your mix sounds dull, dark, muffled — like it's coming from inside a box. Too much and it sounds brittle, tinny, and sibilant.
The move: High shelf starting at 8–10 kHz, +1.5 to +2.5 dB. This adds air and clarity without harshness. A shelf is better than a bell here because the effect should be broad and smooth, not focused.
How to check: Compare to a commercial reference in your genre. If your highs above 8 kHz are consistently 2–3 dB below the reference, add the shelf. If they match, leave it alone — don't add air that isn't needed.
This is also the range that disappears first with listening fatigue. After 30 minutes of mixing, your ears are less sensitive to highs. Take a 10-minute break before making high-shelf decisions, or you'll overcompensate and make your mix too bright.
Frequency 5: 60–100 Hz — Low-end weight
This is where kick drum fundamental and bass guitar weight live. Get this right and your mix sounds powerful on every system. Get it wrong and your mix either booms on speakers or vanishes on phones.
The move: This is the one frequency where a boost might be appropriate — a gentle shelf at 60–80 Hz, +1 to +2 dB, can add weight and warmth. But be careful: this range is genre-dependent. Electronic and hip-hop need more here; acoustic and folk need less. Always compare to a reference.

How to check: The mix analyzer flags low-end imbalance when your 60–100 Hz region is disproportionate relative to the rest of the spectrum. If you get this warning, address it before touching mix bus EQ.
Putting it all together: the mix bus EQ workflow
Here's the order I recommend for mix bus EQ:
- High-pass at 25 Hz (12 dB/octave) — remove subsonic rumble
- Bell cut at 300 Hz (Q 1.2, -2 dB) — clear mud
- Check 3–4 kHz — cut 1.5 dB only if harshness is a mix-wide problem
- High shelf at 10 kHz (+2 dB) — add air
- Evaluate 60–80 Hz — boost or cut based on genre and reference comparison
That's five moves. Not 30 bands. Not a matching EQ plugin. Five deliberate, audible, reference-checked moves. After each one, A/B with the EQ bypassed to make sure you're actually improving the mix — not just changing it.
The biggest mix bus EQ mistake
The #1 mistake isn't a wrong frequency — it's mixing into mix bus EQ from the start. If you add mix bus EQ before your mix is balanced, you compensate for imbalance with EQ instead of fixing the balance. The result: your mix gets worse over time because you're EQing an EQing an EQ.

Verify with analysis, not just ears
