Why Your Mix Sounds Quiet on Spotify (And How to Fix It)

You finished your mix. It sounds huge in your studio — punchy, wide, loud. You upload it to Spotify, press play, and... it sounds weak. Quieter than other tracks. Thin. Lifeless. What happened?

The answer is almost always loudness normalization. Spotify doesn't play your track at the level you mastered it — it measures your track's integrated LUFS and adjusts playback to hit its own target. If your mix is louder than -14 LUFS, Spotify turns it down. If it's quieter, Spotify turns it up, but with a limiter that can squash your dynamics. Either way, the result can sound worse than what you heard in the studio.

The good news: this is entirely fixable. Here's exactly why it happens and what to do about it.

How Spotify's loudness normalization works

When you upload a track to Spotify (via Distrokid, CD Baby, or any distributor), Spotify's backend does the following:

  1. Transcodes your file to Ogg Vorbis or AAC for streaming
  2. Measures integrated LUFS using the ITU-R BS.1770 standard
  3. Normalizes to -14 LUFS for premium subscribers, -19 LUFS for free tier
  4. Applies a limiter to prevent clipping when turning up quiet tracks

The two reasons your mix sounds quiet

There are two distinct scenarios, and the fix is different for each:

Scenario 1: You mastered too loud (over -14 LUFS)

If you mastered to -8 or -10 LUFS — common for loud genres like EDM, metal, and modern pop — Spotify turns you down 4–6 dB to hit -14. The problem: you already pushed your limiter hard to get to -8, which crushed your transients and dynamics. Now Spotify turns you down, so you've lost both loudness and dynamics. You sound quieter and flatter than a track mastered to -14 directly.

This is the most common cause of "quiet on Spotify" complaints. The producer mastered louder than the platform target, thinking louder = better. It doesn't. On Spotify, louder just means turned down.

Scenario 2: You mastered too quiet (under -14 LUFS)

If you mastered to -18 or -20 LUFS — common for acoustic, jazz, and classical — Spotify turns you up 4–6 dB. This can sound fine, but Spotify's limiter may catch peaks and introduce artifacts. More importantly, if your track has wide dynamics (quiet verses, loud choruses), the normalization can make quiet sections audible but squash the loud ones, reducing the impact you intended.

The fix: master to the right target

The solution is straightforward: master to -14 LUFS integrated with -1 dBTP true peak. This is Spotify's target, and it's also YouTube's target. Apple Music normalizes to -16 LUFS, so they'll turn you up 2 dB — but their limiter handles that cleanly, and 2 dB of makeup gain rarely causes issues.

Here's why -14 works:

The trade-off: -14 LUFS is less loud than what you hear on commercial releases in loud genres. But those commercial releases are also being turned down by Spotify. The "loudness war" is over — streaming won.

Step-by-step: fix your mix for Spotify

  1. Measure your current LUFS. Upload your master to the free LUFS checker or use Youlean Loudness Meter. Note the integrated LUFS value.
  2. If you're louder than -14: Reduce your limiter's output ceiling or drive until integrated LUFS hits -14. This will actually improve your dynamics — you're un-squashing what the limiter crushed.
  3. If you're quieter than -14: Increase limiter drive gradually until you hit -14. Watch your true peak — keep it at -1 dBTP.
  4. Verify true peak. Spotify's encoder can introduce inter-sample peaks. Master to -1 dBTP, not -0.1 dBFS. See our guide on true peak and clipping.
  5. Re-check after bounce. Always measure the final bounced file, not the real-time output. The bounce can differ from what your meter shows during playback.

But won't -14 LUFS sound too quiet?

This is the most common objection, and it's understandable. If you're used to hearing your track at -8 LUFS in your studio, -14 will sound noticeably quieter in your studio. But on Spotify, both tracks play at the same level — -14. The -8 master gets turned down 6 dB, the -14 master plays as-is. They're equally loud to the listener.

The difference is the -14 master retains its dynamics. The kick punches harder. The snare cracks. The chorus swells. The -8 master, turned down to -14, has already been flattened — nothing dynamics-wise is left to enjoy.

If you want to check this yourself, A/B your -8 master and a -14 version side by side on Spotify. The -14 version will sound more alive, and equally loud. That's the whole point.

What about SoundCloud and Bandcamp?

SoundCloud and Bandcamp don't normalize to -14 LUFS. SoundCloud applies light normalization but doesn't enforce a strict target. Bandcamp plays your file as-is. For these platforms, louder masters (around -10 to -12 LUFS) can be competitive. If you're distributing to both streaming and direct-download platforms, consider delivering two masters: a -14 version for Spotify/Apple/YouTube and a -10 version for SoundCloud/Bandcamp.
